A teenage girl has tragically died after becoming unwell at the Emerge music festival in Belfast. The girl, named locally as Mia Keevan, was from Co Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland. Tributes have poured in for the 17-year-old, described as a "bright, fun and much loved girl who touched the hearts of anyone that knew her."
Mia passed away in hospital following the incident at the festival, which took place over the weekend at Boucher Road Fields. An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding her sudden death. Superintendent Allister Hagan of the PSNI stated, "Police will continue to work closely with event organisers and the licensing authority to ensure that events remain safe and enjoyable for all of those who attend."
A Gofundme page has been established to assist Mia's family, raising nearly £7,000 to help cover unexpected costs. Sarah Roche, who organised the fundraiser, described Mia as someone who "lit up every room she walked into" and expressed the community's desire to support her family during this difficult time.
During the festival, police reported that a number of arrests were made, with seven individuals detained for various offences, including disorderly behaviour and possession of controlled drugs. Police were present throughout the event, working alongside local authorities to ensure safety.
Cllr David Dunne from Tipperary expressed the community's shock and sadness, stating, "There is a great shock and sadness in the community and our hearts go out to the family." Belfast city councillor Micky Murray also shared his condolences, calling the news "utterly heartbreaking" and emphasising the need for a thorough investigation. He urged the public not to speculate on the circumstances while police inquiries are ongoing.
The festival, intended as a safe space for music lovers, has now become the focus of a serious investigation as authorities seek to understand the events that led to this tragic incident.
