PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - A growing number of colleges and universities across the country are getting false reports of active threats since the start of the school year, and one local university is preparing for that possibility.
Colleges across the country are being targeted by a disturbing trend called “swatting,” which is when someone falsely reports a threat to any particular location.
Under Illinois law, swatting would be classified as disorderly conduct, which is a class four felony.
Bradley University Police Chief Brian Joschko said swatting calls are usually made from a different city, country, or outside area.
“From my perspective, they are looking to create disruption and dysfunction across and put people in a state where they’re scared of what’s going on,” he said.
