PICKSTOWN, S.D. (KELO) - A piece of infrastructure built over 70 years ago is now undergoing it's largest rehabilitation project ever. In July, new generator pieces started arriving to the Fort Randall Dam near Pickstown, South Dakota, so crews could begin work on a six-year project.

As you come around the bend on the edge of Pickstown, you are greeted by a picturesque view of Lake Francis Case -- a large reservoir on the Missouri River impounded by the Fort Randall Dam. And at the Dam itself, all is calm.

However, inside the powerhouse, a massive modernization project has begun to the 72-year-old fixture. But before we talk about the future of the Fort Randall Dam, let's take a quick look back at its past. The US Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the dam in 1946.
