MONROE, La. (KNOE) - On Aug. 27, 1999, Northeast Louisiana University officially became the University of Louisiana Monroe.
It was the fifth name for the institution.
ULM was founded in 1931 as Ouachita Parish Junior College. The change was made as part of the system-wide restructuring of Louisiana’s university system.
It was thought to better reflect the university’s role as a major education center for the entire region.
