HARRISVILLE, New York (WWNY) - Who responds to emergency calls in Harrisville? Right now, two ambulance squads say they should, for different reasons.

Headquartered in Lowville, Lewis County Search and Rescue is about 35 minutes from the rural hamlet of Harrisville.

Harrisville has been without an ambulance squad for a couple of years. It dissolved due to a lack of volunteers.

Josh Levesque with Lewis County Search and Rescue says that responsibility now rests with his squad.

“Their certificate initially was to be transferred to Natural Bridge to cover that area. They had until March of this year to do that, and that didn’t happen,” he said.

Levesque says a “certificate of need” or CON protects the rights of ambulance companies in certain territories and is legally binding.
