CANTON, New York (WWNY) - St. Lawrence County is looking to change the way properties are handled when owners don’t pay taxes. It would put more responsibility on towns and villages.

When some property owners don’t pay taxes to towns and villages, those municipalities forward the bill to St. Lawrence County, and the county pays up. It’s a practice the county is thinking about changing.

“When those municipalities do not reduce the assessments and keep on handing us the bill every year to make them whole, the bill is paid from the county-wide tax base, so every county taxpayer ends up paying for the delinquent taxes from those individual municipalities,” said St. Lawrence County Attorney Stephen Button.

Button has lawmakers considering two resolutions. One is called Real Property Tax Law
