ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The American Automobile Association held a press conference today to kick off their “School’s Open, Drive Carefully” campaign with police, reminding drivers to stay safe on the road as children return to the classroom.

According to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, approximately 50,000 vehicles in New York State illegally pass stopped school buses each day.

"At the end of the school year, that's about 9 million cars that pass school buses illegally," said NYSP Trooper Lynnea Crane. "If we put that into perspective that would be like the population of Rochester and buffalo combined passing a school bus illegally every school. So, it's important that we stop for school buses so that children are able to go to and from school safely. "
