ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — At a time when several local governments are adjusting DEI policies to meet the federal government’s latest standards, Rochester and Monroe County are doubling down on them, codifying the city’s sanctuary policies and extending protections for minority groups.

Tuesday evening, the Rochester City Council had a unanimous vote to not only stand by its sanctuary city policies but also strengthen them by formally adding protections for immigrants and LGBTQIA+ residents. This is despite the federal government's recent lawsuit against Rochester, alleging that its sanctuary policies directly interfere with immigration enforcement.
