WASHINGTON, DC (WENY) -- The first NextGen Acela Amtrak train rolled out of Washington, DC Wednesday morning, on its inaugural trip.

A celebration was hosted at Union Station ahead of the departure. The Amtrak Acela rail cars are the first high-speed trains built in the United States; manufactured at Alstom in Hornell, NY.

Twenty-eight of the new trains will enter service through 2027. They can reach speeds up to 160 miles per hour, which is ten miles faster than the current fleet. They offer free 5G WiFi, individual power outlets, and reading lights.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy traveled on board Wednesday morning, departing from Union Station in DC, to Penn Station in New York City.
