KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — Following Tuesday’s crash on US-131, which damaged a bridge and closed the highway, experts say wrecks involving commercial trucks are happening far too often — and a lack of training may be a key factor.

Steve Gold, founder and CEO of 160 Driving Academy, the largest commercial truck driving school in the country, said there are nearly 100,000 semi-truck crashes per year nationwide. He believes inexperience is one of the leading causes.

“If you’re 16 and you want to drive a car, you have to go to driver’s ed,” Gold said. “If you want to drive an 80,000-pound missile down the highway, there’s a lot of people who don’t think you have to go to a driving school.”
