CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Republicans in the State Senate lost their super majority after a Democrat flipped a northwest Iowa district in a special election.

Catelin Drey won in a District easily carried by President Trump last year. The seat was held by Republican State Sen. Rocky DeWitt until he died in June.

Drey won with 55% of the vote in a district Donald Trump won by double digits. While the win doesn’t necessarily give the Democratic Party much more power in the legislature, Democratic leaders believe momentum is turning in their favor.

“We met people where they are, we knocked on over 17,000 doors,” Drey said.

Democrat Catelin Drey says an intense door-knocking and online campaign helped flip Iowa’s first State Senate district blue.

It’s something she says wasn’t a fluke.
