SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- It's a doctor's appointment most women wish they could avoid. The pelvic exam, known as the pap smear, is used to detect cervical cancer-causing HPV. So, despite how uncomfortable the exam can be for some, it's vital not to avoid your appointment.

San Francisco-based Teal-Health is reimagining the process for women, becoming the latest in a trend of telehealth opportunities. The current tool used in a doctor's office for pap smears is called a speculum, and it hasn't changed design since the 1870s. Teal Health has created a wand for women to conduct the exam on their own and meet virtually with a doctor about the results.
