SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A new ID badge system aimed at improving student safety is coming to Suffolk Public Schools.

Part of this new initiative will require students to scan an ID badge when they get on and off the school bus.

"We're excited, but it's just another layer to show how committed our school board and our school community is for school safety,” said Rodney Brown, SPS chief of administrative services.

He told 10 On Your Side the ultimate goal of this program is to get all students identification badges just like ones staff members wear.

The initial phase of this will have students who ride the bus scan these badges to help the school division keep track of who is getting on and off.
