Cambridge MP Connie Cody is warning seniors and their families about a rise in online scams in the community.

Cody said her office has been contacted by many residents who have lost money, including life savings, to fraud. She said scammers are now using artificial intelligence in schemes such as romance traps, grandparent scams and fake celebrity ads.

“People in our community have already lost hundreds of thousands of dollars — entire life savings — starting with just one click,” the statement said.

She noted that last year, scams cost Canadian victims more than $638 million, an increase of more than 10 per cent over 2023.
