Video released by the Los Angeles Police Department Wednesday captured a deadly encounter between officers and a man with a machete outside Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles .

The July 13 confrontation unfolded after officers responded to reports of an armed man near Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street. The man stopped his car in the middle of the street and got out swinging a sword or machete, according to the radio call.

When officers arrived, the armed man moved toward officers, then got into a black Dodge Challenger and headed south on Figueroa Street, the LAPD said.

Video showed the Challenger circling in the street with patrol SUVs trailing the car in a brief pursuit that ended south of 12th Street
