Detroit – The ACLU of Michigan is applauding a decision by a federal judge that ruled a Detroit man detained by immigration officials should be released or granted a bond hearing.

The ACLU had objected to the detention of Juan Manuel Lopez-Campos, who has lived in the United States since 1999 and has five children who are U.S. citizens.

On Friday U.S. District Judge Brandy McMillion ruled that Lopez-Campos must be given the chance to appear before an immigration judge, where he could seek release from detention while his immigration case proceeds through the system.

Lopez-Campos, who has no criminal record, has been in immigration custody since June 25, when he was pulled over during a routine traffic stop, said the ACLU.
