Just 16.6% of Detroit voters cast ballots in the Aug. 5 primary to nominate candidates for mayor and city council.
It was a distressingly low turnout, considering the city is electing a new mayor for the first time in 12 years and must fill two vacant council seats.
The leaders they select will bear the responsibility for continuing the forward progress Detroit has enjoyed under Mayor Mike Duggan, who is stepping down to run for governor. Voters should be fully engaged in deciding who guides them into a post-Duggan future.
And the candidates should do everything possible to excite them about their campaigns.
City Council President Mary Sheffield and the Rev. Solomon Kinloch emerged from the primary and will face each other on Nov. 4.
