A federal judge has dismissed most claims in a former Shenandoah County deputy’s lawsuit against Sheriff Timothy C. Carter.

Former deputy Jacob T. Unger, who has since been hired by the Strasburg Police Department, claims in a civil complaint filed in April in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia that Carter violated his rights under the U.S. Constitution and Virginia law.

Unger’s lawsuit can move forward on the claim that Carter defamed him by making false statements about the events leading up to the deputy’s termination.

Carter fired Unger on April 22, 2024, over the deputy’s handling of an April 5, 2024, alcohol-involved motor vehicle crash. Unger has claimed he acted on the directions of his supervisors. Unger claims Carter continued to violate his rights af
