TUSAYAN, AZ (AZFamily) — Many people are heading to national parks or for outdoor activities to wrap up their summers. For one Northern Arizona community, however, they’re still reeling from a lack of summer tourism.
According to AAA, 17 million people were expected to travel this Labor Day weekend, and tourism from the Grand Canyon is the lifeblood of Tusayan.
Community workers said the line to enter the Grand Canyon should reach into town on Labor Day, but on Monday, there were hardly any tourists, and that is a worrying trend for the community.
Sitting just outside Grand Canyon National Park, Tusayan typically welcomes tourists from all over the world. Ferdenan Mayr and his family are from Germany and were stopping in for lunch before heading to the canyon.
