Sault Ste. Marie’s future is bright, says Ontario’s minister of northern economic development and growth.
George Pirie met with officials at Algoma Steel on a trip to Sault Ste. Marie Tuesday to discuss the future of the steelmaker’s industry in Ontario – and Canada.
“I’m optimistic about the future of Algoma Steel, as we pivot from our dependence on American markets, Pirie told a crowd at an NOHFC funding announcement at the Downtown Plaza.
“Algoma Steel has a tremendous, unique product that can be used for ice breakers and protect Canada’s arctic,” he said.
Pirie reiterated Premier Doug Ford’s support for Ontario steel and noted that the steelmakers have migrated to other markets in the past years and now need to pivot back to products that Ontario needs.
