A funicular carriage has derailed in Lisbon killing 15 people and injuring several others, emergency services say. ‌

Five of the injured are in a serious condition, the National Institute for Medical Emergencies said in a statement. It's understood an unknown number of the injured are foreigners. ‌

The funicular carriage derailed in the Portuguese capital at about 6pm on Wednesday. ‌

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa offered his condolence to affected families.

An anonymous police source earlier told TV channel CNN Portugal that three people were killed and at least 20 injured, some of them critically. Officials did not publicly confirm the reports at the time. ‌
