HURLEY – The Town of Hurley Highway Department has placed signs, warning flags and road cones on the O&W Rail Trail where it intersects with Russell Road in Hurley, cautioning pedestrians and bicyclists about motor vehicle traffic.
The crossing is located just a few feet from where traffic on Route 209, which has a 55 mph speed limit, turns onto Russell Road, creating potential hazards for trail users.
There have been several near misses reported in which trail users wearing headphones did not stop as directed and did not hear oncoming vehicles, which had to brake suddenly to avert a tragedy.
Trail users are urged to obey the new warnings and always check for traffic before crossing Russell Road.
