PIERRE, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Attorney General Marty Jackley announced on September 5 that an SD Division of Criminal Investigation review found that three officers were justified in their use of force during a pursuit and hostage situation in Haakon County on August 5, 2025.
“Tribal, state, and local law enforcement officers placed themselves in harm’s way to protect the hostage and the public,” said Attorney General Jackley. “The officers were justified in the use of force to protect the hostage and themselves.”
The incident started when Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement officers pursued a vehicle over a weapons call near Green Grass on the reservation, extending into Haakon County, with multiple other agencies joining the pursuit.
