MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks has proposed removing New Chicago from the list of potential sites for a new county jail, citing contamination concerns at the old Firestone property.
The proposal comes amid discussions about building the jail on the Firestone site, which has been met with backlash from nearby residents. Brooks emphasizes the need for county leaders to slow down and consider all options, alleging the Firestone site is a brownfield.
"When you think about New Chicago, you got to remember, the old Firestone plant - okay - there was a lot of contamination," Brooks said during an August 26 interview with WREG's Alex Coleman. "There was soil there that is contaminated and it hasn't been remediated."
