CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn -- Coney Island had its first Pee-wee Herman universe look-alike contest, and it lived up to the billing.
Adam Rinn, artistic director at the arts organization Coney Island USA, co-produced the event with Sideshows by the Seashore performer Little Brooklyn. The duo was smitten with the zany turnout.
"We've seen quite a few Pee-wee's, I've seen a Pee-wee dog, a few Miss Yvonne's, one Captain Carl. I've seen a couple of flowers, bikers - it's just a celebration of the whole universe here," gushed Rinn. His co-producer says Coney Island is the perfect place for Pee-wee fans to assemble because the community, "celebrate(s) similar things, creativity, being unique, having a good time, staying forever young."
