The universities of Kent and Greenwich are set to ‘merge’ in a shock move that’s the first of its kind.
The University of Kent, which has its main campus in Canterbury and a smaller site in Medway , has 16,000 students and employs more than 3,000 people in academic and support roles.
It has been without a vice chancellor since the departure of Professor Karen Cox in May 2024 amid a growing financial crisis.
She left shortly after the announcement of a major redundancy programme to help plug a £12 million deficit.
The university also dropped courses including art history, journalism and music.
The University of Greenwich, which also has a base on the Medway campus in addition to its main facility in south east London, is known to be in a far stronger financial position, with a cash
