PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Four years after the board of Salem-Keizer Public Schools approved its first equity resolution, it is undergoing a “complete rewrite.”
Board members read a new resolution titled “Commitment to Students” at a meeting on Tuesday. The resolution, which has been renewed annually since it first passed in 2021, was previously referred to as the “Commitment To Equity Centered On Race And Anitracism.”
The proposed commitment includes the five “core values” that the school district adopted earlier in the spring, under its “Climbing Together” strategic plan: students at the center, excellence, equity, relationships and community.
Notably, this version has also nixed any references to white supremacy. Board Director Mel Fuller expressed concerns with the proposal's failure
