FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/FOX24) — The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and the Fort Smith Police Department signed a cross-deputization agreement Sept. 5.
The partnership is the first-ever tribal law enforcement agreement in Arkansas. The two agencies signed a memorandum of understanding, which will allow for mutual aid in each other's jurisdiction.
The agreement is a part of Senate Bill 510, which allows partnerships between Arkansas law enforcement and federally recognized tribes.
Through the MOU, the agencies will be able to assist in any violations of the law, as well as help with arrests, investigations and detentions, regardless of the jurisdiction.
