(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back at every day in ‘This Day In History.’
On this day in history, the nation is marking the 24th anniversary of the deadliest terror attack on American soil.
On September 11, 2001, Islamic terrorists hijacked four commercial planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center towers in New York, one into the Pentagon, and one into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed that day.
Each of these sights still hosts yearly memorials to honor the lives lost.
