MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Community members in Madera gathered to honor the first responders who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks as part of the city's annual remembrance ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 11.

The event took place in front of the county’s downtown firefighter memorial, which features an original steel beam from the World Trade Center. Officials say the site is one of only a handful nationwide to display such a relic.

The ceremony included a presentation of colors, keynote speakers, and a bell salute performed by the CAL Fire L2881 Honor Guard.

Courthouse Park, where the memorial is located, also features monuments dedicated to veterans and local law enforcement.
