WASHINGTON — Starting Tuesday, Sept. 30, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will phase out paper checks for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in line with one of President Donald Trump’s executive orders.
Fewer than 1% of benefit recipients still receive their payments by mail. The SSA is urging those beneficiaries to switch to electronic methods, either direct deposit into a bank account or the Direct Express prepaid debit card, to avoid interruptions.
Federal agencies, including the SSA, are sending notices to people who still receive paper checks with instructions for enrolling in one of the electronic payment options. For many, the change will require simply updating payment information online, by phone, or at a local SSA office.
To make the
