EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A new pilot program at the Academy for Innovative Studies aims to determine whether an added layer of security can help prevent weapons from entering classrooms.
Launched at the start of the school year, the program requires students to pass through walk-through metal detectors when entering both the middle and high school sections of the building.
Parents like Rachel Smith support the move, especially when it comes to protecting their children.
“They do not deserve that,” Smith said. “They are trying to go and better their education, and they shouldn’t have to worry about guns or violence or anything like that.”
