Three slain police were front of mind as hundreds of officers hit the streets on motorcycles to honour colleagues killed in the line of duty.

Hundreds more remain searching for a gunman wanted over the deaths of two of those police in northeast Victoria, with investigators still certain Dezi Freeman remains in the area.

Loud revs rang out as 400 riders set off on Friday morning to begin the long ride from Melbourne to the National Police Memorial in Canberra, where 2000 members from around the nation are set to meet.

This year's Wall to Wall Ride for Remembrance holds special significance with Victoria Police still reeling over the killing of two police in Porepunkah in late August.
