MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Mayor Paul Young said Friday that he didn't ask for the National Guard to come to the city and didn't think it was the way to drive down crime, but since the decision has been made, he would work with them.

"I do not support the National Guard — however, they are coming. It's not the mayor's call," Young said. "The mayor doesn't have the say or the authority to stop them from coming. So my goal is to make sure that, as they come, that I have an opportunity to work with them to strategize on how they engage in this community."

Young, flanked by political leaders in Memphis City Hall a few hours after the announcement, said he was informed Friday morning that federal resources would be sent to the city.
