STATE COLLEGE — The Penn State offense spread the ball around and the defense took it away.

The two units combined efforts to spark a 39-point outburst over a stretch of 24 minutes Saturday, turning a sluggish start into a 52-6 romp over Villanova before an announced crowd of 109,516 at Beaver Stadium.

Villanova’s only score came on fourth down on the final play of the game, preventing the Nittany Lions from posting a second straight shutout.

No. 2 Penn State led just 13-0 in the last minute of the first half in the final tuneup before the start of the Big Ten season in two weeks against Oregon.
