WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Watertown is taking its first steps into unfamiliar territory now that cannabis dispensaries can open within city limits.

Council Member Cliff Olney likes how regulated things will be.

“Being regulated increases the safety of the product that’s being sold to the community because there’s some illegal product out there that’s being laced with fentanyl. We know that, and some of the smoke shops that I’ve heard are selling it behind or under the counter. We know that’s going on. So this gives us more authority over it,” he said.

The state has rules when it comes to where these shops can go, like they cannot be within 200 feet of a place of worship or within 500 feet of a school.
