YUMA (AZFamily) — Work crews with the city of Yuma dumped a fresh pile of sand at their sandbag station Thursday morning.
Residents showed up nonstop to fill bags, hoping the extra protection will keep floodwaters out of their homes.
For many families, stacking them around doors and garages could be the difference between staying dry or facing costly damage.
The worry isn’t new. Two weeks ago, Tropical Storm Lorena dropped more than an inch of rain on Yuma. Streets turned into rivers. Some neighborhoods flooded and water seeped into homes.
“We had to dry out the carpet, steam clean it, and make repairs because we didn’t want mold to set in. This time, hopefully, we can keep it from flooding the house again,” said Adrian Harshman, a Yuma resident who was filling up sand bags for his ho
