RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- A crash involving at least seven cars Sunday afternoon closed Interstate 40 in southwest Raleigh near U.S. 1, officials said.
The crash was reported just after 1:30 p.m. along the eastbound I-40 lanes at mile marker 293, which is near the U.S. 1 interchange, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Images from DOT cameras showed at least seven vehicles that were off the highway with emergency vehicles surrounding them. Two ambulances were at the scene.
Initially, one lane of I-40 east was closed, but at 2:09 p.m., all eastbound I-40 lanes were closed.
NCDOT cameras and traffic data indicated that gridlock from the crash extended three miles to Trinity Road.
The Raleigh Police Department is investigating the wreck.
