A 66-year-old Fish Lake homeowner was shot by an intruder after he interrupted a burglary in progress on Sunday morning, the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office wrote in a press release.

According to the sheriff's office, the man arrived at his home in the unincorporated community to discover an intruder carrying two rifles inside the house's garage. The intruder fled, and the homeowner proceeded inside, where he encountered a second intruder.

"A scuffle ensued between the two and ended when the homeowner was shot," the press release reads. "The intruder immediately fled from the residence."

LaPorte County sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene shortly after 8:00 a.m. The homeowner, who had been struck in the upper chest, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
