The astronomical event, known as the autumnal equinox, marks the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator, bringing nearly equal hours of daylight and darkness across the globe.

While many associate fall with crisp air, colorful foliage, and pumpkin-spiced everything, the equinox itself is a scientific marker of seasonal change. From now until the winter solstice in December, daylight hours will gradually shorten in the Northern Hemisphere as nights grow longer.
