PORTLAND, Maine — Will Grunewald, the editor in chief of “ Down East ” magazine, was out for a stroll last fall when he noticed that the foliage around him was especially beautiful. That, of course, is not uncommon during autumn in Maine.
But on that day Will was not on a mountain or along a lake or river or any other place where people go to see the leaves in all their glory. He was in Portland, a place cruise ships and bus tours seek out for the food and culture, not the foliage.
At Will’s suggestion, staff photographer Dave Waddell was soon on his way to the city, and his eye-catching pictures can be seen in the magazine’s October issue.
