BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — After a bill recently passed requiring North Dakota schools to teach Native American history, the textbooks used to teach students about the five tribes in the state are being updated this school year.

This comes after Senate Bill 2304 passed in the 2021-23 legislative assembly, needing two readings to pass both chambers.

The first book in the series, Journey to Understanding: An Introduction to North Dakota Tribes, has been released this semester. It was first released in 2002, to help Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) employees better understand the Native communities across North Dakota.

The book is available for download for free on the University of North Dakota's Scholarly Commons website.
