SANGER, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A former Sanger Police officer who was charged in federal court for a series of sexual assaults while on duty faces five consecutive life sentences, the Department of Justice announced on Monday.

The defendant, J. Deshawn Torrence of Corcoran, was sentenced on Monday inside Fresno's federal courthouse. The Department of Justice says that from August 2017 to June 2021, the 41-year-old engaged in various forms of nonconsensual sexual conduct while on duty.

Torrence was indicted in July 2022, having told a victim in one instance to remove her clothing without a legitimate enforcement purpose and forcing his victims to engage in sex acts. In another instance, Torrence forcibly raped a 67-year-old woman during a DUI investigation.
