A three-vehicle crash in Ponchatoula Monday night sent eight people to area hospitals, including three children under the age of 8 who were taken by air ambulance to Our Lady of the Lake-Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge, authorities said.

Ponchatoula police said in a news release Tuesday that one of the children was taken by air to a hospital. Police Chief Bry Layrisson said some of the injuries are "life threatening."

"These are very significant injuries," Layrisson said in an interview.

Police said the crash occurred around 6:27 p.m. on U.S. 51 North, near St. Patrick's Boulevard. Details were not available, but police said the crash involved a Chevrolet Silverado pickup and GMC Terrain and Hyundai Tuscon SUVs.
