GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids’ Veterans Memorial Park is marking its fifth year of being an official ArtPrize venue and features 26 unique pieces to view and interact with this art competition.

“It was an unused space, and I thought this is an ArtPrize space waiting to happen,” said venue curator Pamela Alderman.

This year’s theme centers around art of resilience. The entries span 2D, 3D and sculpture categories.

It is Rex Greenawalt's first year being featured as an artist. His book of poems is on display near the fountain.

“They just come to me,” he said. “People like them. I don’t understand why.”

Greenawalt was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967. He served for less than two years, because in his words, “I kept forgetting to duck.”
