GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids athlete Alex Rose has done something that no Samoan athlete has ever done before: medal at the World Athletics Championships.

Rose took bronze in the discus throw on Sunday night in Tokyo, reaching 66.96 meters in the finals. Afterward, Rose told reporters that he felt happy, proud and a little nauseous in the wake of the competition.

“You think this is going to happen, right? You have to, as an athlete, when you come to these championships, prep like it’s going to happen, execute like it’s going to happen, and when it does, it’s an entirely different thing,” Rose told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Sunday’s final was reportedly delayed for nearly two hours because of heavy rains and the rain certainly had an impact on the competition.
