MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — A local nonprofit is working to restore Muskegon’s South Breakwater Light, a nearly century-old structure that has stood as both a navigational beacon and a symbol of pride for the community.
“They are our treasures ... they're our legacy ... they're our future,” said Kim Lange, volunteer manager with the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy.
Years of waves and ice have left the lighthouse in disrepair.
“That was part of its demise was that the waves and the ice not only form on the outside, it has a number of holes and broken windows so that rain and waves get inside and freeze,” explained Lange.
The group has already secured significant funding.
