ATHENS, Texas — The Athens ISD Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of an employee who was previously charged with drug possession.

Nicholas Bartlett Durham, who was the Athens ISD band director, was arrested in early September on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, according to the Henderson County Sheriff's Office and Athens ISD.

Athens ISD said in a statement that Durham's resignation has been formally accepted. Cheyenne Hernandez has been named interim head director.

"She brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of our students and music program," a spokesperson for Athens ISD said. "The district has also hired an additional staff member to provide support and instruction."
