ANNA MARIA, Fla. ( WWSB ) - The emergency no-swim zone ordinance for Anna Maria Island’s Bean Point was vetoed by Mayor Mark Short because he says it was poorly worded.

Short vetoed this ordinance at a Sept. 15 meeting. Short told ABC7 his decision was based on a loophole.

“An ordinance was passed on the caveat that allowed certain people the right to swim there, and that particular caveat made it very difficult for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and code enforcement people to enforce the no-swim ban.”

Short said the ordinance would have allowed anyone who owns or rents property on that stretch of beach to swim there, but not visitors.

Scott MacGregor, who’s lived on the island for more than 50 years, said Bean Point is his last choice of beach on the island.
