Australian Opals coach Sandy Brondello has been sacked by the New York Liberty in a surprise decision just one year after winning the WNBA title.
The Queenslander led New York to their first championship in 2024 but the team struggled with injuries to star players Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu this year.
New York earned the No.5 seed in the playoffs and lost in the first round to the Phoenix Mercury.
“It has been a privilege to have coached the NY Liberty these last four years,” Brondello told the Associated Press after being sacked.
“Bringing the first ever championship to New York will always be the most amazing feeling. I wish the team and organisation more success moving forward.”
Brondello went 107-53 in her four seasons with the team, giving her the most win
